Chicago Publishing Scene: Something for Everyone

Chicago is home to dozens of publishers, many of which are flourishing, all of which cater to readers and book-lovers. If you haven't checked it out already, visit the Chicago Publishers Gallery at the Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph. The gallery bookends the main staircase, which leads to various and sundry exhibits that also always are worth visiting.

Chicago Publishers Gallery "showcases the vast variety of publishing ventures" in Chicagoland. The Cultural Center has books on display in the gallery and has a few on sale in the gift shop. You'll find titles from University of Chicago Press, Naperville-based Sourcebooks, and Random House's local operation Triumph Books, among others. The gallery features titles by micropresses, specialty houses, journal publishers, underground zines, and traditional publishers alike.

For information, visit the Cultural Center (it's good to get out of the house once in a while!) or visit online at www.chicagopublishersgallery.com.

Chicago Publishing Network in Person

We're thinking of having a very informal, vaguely impromptu, unofficial get-together sometime in January or February. Watch this space or the LinkedIn message board for more information.

Support Your Local Bookstore

Publishing is suffering here in Chicago and across the country. Houses large, small, and micro are putting the brakes on aquiring new titles, laying off staff, and pushing back pub dates. Bookstores are struggling. Show your support for your business, your colleagues, and your favorite authors by getting out to your local bookstore and laying down some cash! Sunday's New York Times Book Review once again featured a bit about the demise of the traditional bookstore, which would be a catastrophe for those of us who actually like to, oh, I don't know, see a book, feel a book, and thumb through its pages before actually buying it. Regardless, though, of where or how you like to buy your books, remember that any purchase helps keep the business afloat in troubling times.
